Make the next few hours safer

Start at number 1. You do not need to do everything at once.

Tell one person what is happening.

Contact a close friend, your current or previous sponsor, the local mental-health line or Samaritans. Say: “I am using more alcohol or drugs than I want to. I need you to stay in contact with me.”

Do not suddenly stop alcohol if you may be dependent.

If you have been drinking heavily, or get withdrawal symptoms when alcohol wears off, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Get medical advice first.

Contact your local alcohol or drug service.

If you do not know which service to use, call NHS 111, your local mental-health crisis line or your GP. Make contact today, or as soon as the office opens, and book yourself in.

Avoid immediate physical danger.

Do not drive or use dangerous equipment while alcohol or drugs may affect you.
